Brooklyn, NY - The Boston Junior Whalers are excited to share that longtime BJW '00 F Oliver Wahlstrom made his NHL debut last week with the New York Islanders.

Wahlstrom, a native of Cumberland, ME, was selected in 11th Overall in the 1st Round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders.  Oliver grew up playing for the Portland Jr. Pirates program in Maine and the New England Falcons program in Western Massachusetts.  After an 8th Grade season skating on the Varsity Team at North Yarmouth Academy in Maine, Oliver became the youngest player in history to commit to an NCAA Division I school, giving his verbal commitment to the University of Maine.

Wahlstrom then took his talents to the midwest, suiting up for Shattuck St. Mary's for two seasons in Minnesota.  He played the following two season with the U.S. National Development Team, before changing routes and entering Boston College as a true freshman where he played last season 2018-19 after being drafted.

Oliver first suited up for the Boston Junior Whalers 2000 Elite team as a PeeWee back in 2011, and was a driving force in nearly a dozen tournament championships for the BJW 2000 Elites over the years.  He was named the MVP of the 2015 Mini Chowder Cup as a member of one of our strongest teams ever compiled.  His BJW teammates for that event included:  Akil Thomas (2018 NHL 2nd Round Pick), Riley Damaini (2018 NHL 4th Round Pick), TJ Walsh (Northeastern University), Zac Jones (UMass Amherst), Brandon Tabakin (Yale University), Kevin Wall (Penn State University), and several OHL players.

After one year at Boston College, Wahlstrom signed his first professional contract with the New York Islanders this past summer, and began the season with the Islanders' AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.  After a hot start in the AHL, Wahlstrom was called up early last week to make his NHL debut with the NY Islanders.  He will play his 5th consecutive NHL game this evening.

Congratulations to Oliver on all of his success, and we are excited to be able to cheer you on at the highest levels!
