Mission Statement

The Boston Junior Whalers Spring/Summer Hockey Program is dedicated to providing players with an unparalleled spring/summer hockey experience while instituting in each player the proper tools that they need to reach their highest level possible within the game of hockey. Through superior preparedness and experience, we are committed to assisting every Boston Junior Whaler in any manner possible in their growth and development throughout their hockey career.

One of the philosophies and guiding principles in forming the Boston Junior Whalers at the younger ages was for kids from the across US, Canada, and Europe to establish friendships through the game of hockey that will hopefully last a lifetime for them.

Dedication

The Boston Junior Whalers Elite Hockey Club is dedicated to the memory of the late John Cunniff. Born and raised in South Boston, John was a member of the New England Whalers, who captured the World Hockey Association's (WHA) inaugural championship in 1972. Cunniff played 3 years at Boston College before heading to the U.S. National Team and then the U.S. Olympic Team in 1967-1968. While with BC, John was a two-time All American and the first player in history to ever be named Beanpot MVP twice ('64 & '65). After the Whalers moved from New England of the WHA to Hartford of the NHL, John rejoined the team as an Assistant Coach in 1981. He was inducted into the Massachusetts Hockey Hall of fame in 1997 and the U.S. Hockey Hall of fame in 2003. John Cunniff was a Whaler throughout his career, and now the Whalers are back in Boston where they belong.

The first Boston Junior Whalers team was comprised primarily of players who played for John's brother and South Boston hockey legend, Teddy Cunniff, of South Boston. Through Teddy's guidance and leadership, many of his former players have gone on to accomplish great things on and off the ice.
